Tax Time!

Tax Time!

Yes, it’s that time again!  Here is a tax tip for this year!

The AARP provides a free tax preparation service to low and middle income people every year as a service to the community, especially for those over 60 years old.  This is a great way to be sure that you get all the deductions you are owed, get your taxes done accurately, and stretch your dollars this year.

Services start in February, continue until April 15th and are conducted at various public sites on varying days throughout the county, such as Libraries, Boys and Girls Clubs, Community Centers, Community Colleges, and other localities.  Check with your local library to ask about a site and dates near you.  Electronic filing is available.

Service is first come, first serve each day.  No reservations are taken.  So come early to sign up that day.

What you need to bring to the tax site:

  • Your spouse, if married and filing jointly
  • Photo Identification
  • Social Security Card (actual card, no copies, for each person to be claimed)
  • Copy of previous year’s tax return (if you have one)
  • Birthdates for every person to be claimed on your return
  • All end of year tax documentation:  all W-2′s, all 1099′s, unemployment, Social Security, etc.
  • Checking & savings account numbers for direct deposit of refund
  • Documentation for :
  • mortgage interest & property taxes
  • childcare expenses & provider name, address, & tax ID number
  • income taxes or property taxes paid
  • college or other education expenses
  • medical/dental expenses
  • charity contributions

IRS tax booklets and common forms are available at local libraries.
